LECTURE: BASICS OF COLOUR AND THE PRINCIPLES OF COLOUR VISION

Dr. Alison Gilchrist Nature of light, colour and its appearance, language of colour, standard viewing conditions, standard colour terms, standard observer functions, structure & mechanics of the human eye.

LECTURE: ISHIHARA TEST AND AN OVERVIEW OF COLOUR MANAGEMENT

The principles of a colour managed workflow, colour issues, colour gamut, colour management systems, ICC profiles, profiling stages, canned profiles, procedures for profiling a monitor, scanner & printer.

LECTURE: COLOUR REPRODUCTION IN COMPUTER DISPLAYS, SCANNERS AND PRINTERS

Theory and mechanics of scanners (CCD’s & Photomultiplyers), monitors (LCD & CRT) and proofing devices and presses, imaging technology, substrates and ink pigments.

PRACTICAL: PROOFING WITHOUT COLOUR MANAGEMENT

Scanning contone images using default profiles, converting to cmyk using canned profiles & proofing using factory settings.

LECTURE: SCANNING PRINCIPLES AND THE EFFECT ON PRINT QUALITY

Identifying the original, density values, prioritising the tonal range, image capture and output resolution and scanner settings.

PRACTICAL: SCANNING CONTONES, PRINTED IMAGES AND LINE ART

Preparing images for print (line art, contone pre-printed images) using scanner software and QuarkXPress.

PRACTICAL: PROFILING A SCANNER USING MONACOPROFILER AND EYEONE – ASSIGNING THE PROFILE IN PHOTOSHOP
