Understanding Colour and the Principles of Colour Management.
LECTURE: BASICS OF COLOUR AND THE PRINCIPLES OF COLOUR VISION Dr. Alison Gilchrist Nature of light, colour and its appearance, language of colour, standard viewing conditions, standard colour terms, standard observer functions, structure & mechanics of the human eye. LECTURE: ISHIHARA TEST AND AN OVERVIEW OF COLOUR MANAGEMENT The principles of a colour managed workflow, colour issues, colour gamut, colour management systems, ICC profiles, profiling stages, canned profiles, procedures for profiling a monitor, scanner & printer. LECTURE: COLOUR REPRODUCTION IN COMPUTER DISPLAYS, SCANNERS AND PRINTERS Theory and mechanics of scanners (CCD’s & Photomultiplyers), monitors (LCD & CRT) and proofing devices and presses, imaging technology, substrates and ink pigments. PRACTICAL: PROOFING WITHOUT COLOUR MANAGEMENT Scanning contone images using default profiles, converting to cmyk using canned profiles & proofing using factory settings. LECTURE: SCANNING PRINCIPLES AND THE EFFECT ON PRINT QUALITY Identifying the original, density values, prioritising the tonal range, image capture and output resolution and scanner settings. PRACTICAL: SCANNING CONTONES, PRINTED IMAGES AND LINE ART Preparing images for print (line art, contone pre-printed images) using scanner software and QuarkXPress. Practical Applications of Colour Management Software.
PRACTICAL: PROFILING A MONITOR USING BOTH MONACO PROFILER AND EYE-ONE Soft proofing devices, viewing conditions, calibration process (colorimeters, spectrophotometers), hands on profiling of a monitor. LECTURE & PRACTICAL: COLOUR MANAGEMENT IN PHOTOSHOP Colour Settings – Assign and Convert profiles – Proof setup – Rendering intents. LECTURE: UCR/GCR Colour space conversion and the importance of the black generation settings, total ink limits, default and custom settings in Photoshop. PRACTICAL: PROFILING A SCANNER USING MONACO PROFILER AND EYE-ONE – ASSIGNING THE PROFILE IN PHOTOSHOP Disabling default scanner colour correction, transmission and reflection scanner targets and profile generation, profile assignment and file format. Practical Applications of a PDF Colour Managed Workflow.
LECTURE: OVERVIEW – MANAGING A COLOUR WORKFLOW Issues surrounding creating a colour managed PDF workflow. PDF/X3 and PDF/X1-a . LECTURE & PRACTICAL: OPTIMISING THE WORKPLACE FOR COLOUR WORK Standard viewing conditions, including room colour temperature, monitor set-up and inspection procedure for analysing proofs for designers, pre-press and press operators. LECTURE: COLOUR CONVERSION AND INTERPRETATION Colour space conversion and the importance of the black generation settings, total ink limits, and the default/custom software settings using Photoshop. PRACTICAL: LINEARISING THE RIP AND THE RELEVANCE TO COLOUR MANAGEMENT Linearising a Harlequin RIP using Harlequin software. Calibrating a print down frame using a linearised test strip. PRACTICAL: CREATING A CUSTOM TEST SHEET Using Adobe Illustrator and QuarkXPress to layout a test sheet with all necessary colour measurement devices and quality control bars for both linearisation and fingerprinting purposes. LECTURE & PRACTICAL: PRESS STANDARDISATION USING A KOMORI 4 COLOUR PRESS Manufacturers standards, ISO 12647-2, fount solutions, blankets, TVI, calculating total ink limits, grey balance, standardised viewing conditions. Practical Applications of a PDF Colour Managed Workflow
PRACTICAL: PRINTING THE LINEARISATION SHEET ON A KOMORI 4 COLOUR PRESS Running the press to manufacturers standard settings in conjunction with ISO 12647-2. LECTURE & PRACTICAL: ASSESSING PRINTED RESULTS Measuring linearisation sheet and assessing total ink densities. Applying the identified ink density and setting the appropriate UCR/GCR values. PRACTICAL: OUTPUTTING THE CHARACTERISATION (FINGERPRINTING) TARGET Using a PDF workflow and Harlequin RIP to output a characterisation target with optimum UCR/GCR settings applied. PRACTICAL: MEASURE & ANALYSE THE CHARACTERISATION TARGET Creating and applying the press ICC profile.
